Photos: Over 100 People Died In A Petrol Tanker Explosion Accident On Benin-Ore Highway

An accident at Igbogui market along the Ore-Benin highway has claimed the lives of dozens of Nigerians. Eyewitnesses told Saharareporters that over seventy passengers died when a luxury bus belonging to the Young Shall Grow Transport Company collided with a Dangote tanker laden with pms(fuel). The Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), however, reported that 36 persons died.

In a press release issued by the FRSC, the agency gave the cause of the accident as a tyre malfunction on the Dangote truck. “Preliminary reports from the FRSC indicated that a tyre from the Dangote truck suddenly pulled out and rammed into the Tanker which caught fire immediately,” the Press Release says. “The luxury bus which was on speed, lost control and ran into the blazing fire, consuming its occupants.”
The FRSC said it rescued three passengers while 30 others died from the luxury bus. The tanker driver and his conductor were also reported killed in addition to two children who died when the fire spread to a nearby mechanic garage. The FRSC reported that eight other vehicles were burned.
The luxury bus originated from Jibowu station and was headed for Enugu with 30 passengers.
The Benin-Ore highway is famed for its perennial maintenance problems and numerous safety concerns that periodically lead to accidents. Drivers on the road are also known to drive recklessly.
The gridlock caused by the accident forced the FRSC to divert traffic away from Benin-Ore road at Oluku junction to Ifon-Owo-Akure road to Lagos.
According to the Press Release signed by the FRSC Public Education officer, Jonas Agwu, the agency has been concerned about the recent spate of road accidents. The agency blamed speeding and reckless driving for the accidents. “The Federal Road Safety Corps has concluded plans to evoke its statutory mandate by instituting legal actions against the driver and transport operators whose vehicles are responsible for such crashes,” Mr. Agwu said.
The FRSC also resolved “to assist victims and relations of road crash victims to seek compensation from such fleet operators.

Lucky" Nigerian Gets 18 Years of Jail Instead of Death Sentence

"Lucky" Nigerian Gets 18 Years of Jail Instead of Death Sentence
Malaysia - A Nigerian, caught at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) with a stash of drugs in his stomach, pleaded guilty to having 389.8gm of methamphetamine and slapped with 18 years jail by the High Court here.
Francis Ikenna Nwannochie, 27, was also ordered to be given 10 strokes of the cane by Justice Datuk Abdul Alim Abdullah after he pleaded guilty to drug possession at the Customs inspection counter at the KLIA arrival hall in Sepang between 11pm on Feb 29, 2012 and 6.55pm on March 2, 2012.
The judge, who ordered Nwannochie's jail term to run effective from the date of arrest, said the latter was lucky to get away with an alternative charge of drug possession instead of the initial drug trafficking charge that carried the death sentence upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, Nwannochie was detained on Feb 29, 2012 when Customs authorities noticed him walking in a suspicious manner.
On March 1, 2012, he was brought to the Serdang Hospital where an X-ray showed the presence of a foreign lump inside his stomach. The lump was later found to consist of 54 capsules of methamphetamine.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Harris Ong Mohd Jeffery Ong appeared for the prosecution while counsel L. A. Gomes represented the Nigerian.

British Teenage Whiz Strikes Deal With Yahoo

One of Britain’s youngest Internet entrepreneurs has hit the jackpot after selling his top-selling mobile application Summly to search giant Yahoo, Associated Press reported on Tuesday.
Nick D'Aloisio
Seventeen-year-old Nick d’Aloisio, who dreamed up the idea for the content-shortening program when he was studying for his exams, said he was surprised by the deal. As with its other recent acquisitions, Yahoo didn’t disclose how much it is paying for Summly, although British newspapers suggested the deal’s value at several million dollars.
“I would have never imagined being in this position so suddenly,” he wrote on his website, before thanking his family, his school — and his venture capitalist backer Li Ka-Shing — for supporting him.
Summly works by condensing content so readers can scroll through more information more quickly — useful for the small screens of smartphones.
The deal announced Monday is Yahoo’s fifth small acquisition in the past five months. All of them have been part of CEO Marissa Mayer’s effort to attract more engineers with expertise in building services for smartphones and tablet computers, an increasingly important area of technology that she believes the Internet company had been neglecting.
